Artist Statement

At some point in our lives, we all face something where we question how we will ever get past it. We all have moments where we struggle to move on, to get up, to try again. We may feel like we are in a dark hole with no chance of getting out. But we do. We go to work or school. We put on a good face for the people around us because they don't need to see our suffering. After all, they have their own problems and their own hole which they are trying to get out of. That is what this piece represents. It's meant to look like the ocean or an ice cave. On the surface, everything is white and clean. To someone looking at us, they may think that we have it all put together. That we never have any struggles and that out life is perfect. But under the surface of the plexiglass, it's dark and deep and scary. The lowest points are the darkest.
I strongly believe that the tough times of our life are just as important as the great times because they all shape who we are. The troubles and the worries gives us the knowledge and the tools we need to survive the next trouble. The levels of the piece create a rough and uneven surface to the front. This represents the rough path we go when struggling with hard times. However, if looked at the opposite way, those rough, uneven edges can be used as steps to climb back up. If the fall was smooth, the climb back up would be impossible.
