I must have been 13 or 14 at the time. I was so excited to have my very own palm tree. They don't grow in Wisconsin, where I'm from so it was pretty cool. I never thought it would last but now it's over twice as tall as I am. I'm now living in the vacation home and the tree will always be a reminder of my grandma. Map Relief 18" x 24" x 11" In Process: Artist Statement At some point in our lives, we all face something where we question how we will ever get past it. We all have moments where we struggle to move on, to get up, to try again. We may feel like we are in a dark hole with no chance of getting out. But we do. We go to work or school. We put on a good face for the people around us because they don't need to see our suffering. After all, they have their own problems and their own hole which they are trying to get out of. That is what this piece represents. It's meant to look like the ocean or an ice cave. On the surface, everything is white and clean. To someone looking at us, they may think that we have it all put together. That we never have any struggles and that out life is perfect.
